This drama is based on the real-life struggles of a
Japanese 15-year-old girl named Kito Aya ( or Ikeuchi Aya in the
drama), who suffered from an incurable disease, and was able to continue
her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.
As time passes, unusual things start happening
to Aya. She begins falling down often and walking strangely. Her mother Shioka,
takes Aya to see the doctor, and he informs Shioka that Aya has spinocerebellar degeneration.
Spinocerebellar degeneration is a rare disease where the cerebellum of the
brain gradually deteriorates to the point where the victim cannot walk, speak,
write, or eat. A cruel disease, as it does not affect the mind.
Aya kept writing in her diary until she could
no longer hold a pen. She simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of
writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the
same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, doctor, and
friends.
“The place where sis Aya will come back to. From now on, it won’t change.” “I'm so happy that I’m still living.”
Memorable quotes:
"As I think about the past, the tears will
come out. Reality is too cruel, too brutal. I don’t even have the right to
dream. As I think about the future, the tears will come out again."
*********
"I really don’t want to say things such as
‘I want to go back as how things were before.’ I recognize how I am right now,
and I will continue to live on."
*********
"Suffer and suffer through, and there’s a
rainbow colored happiness waiting on the other side. Do not rush it; do not be
greedy. Don’t give up, because everybody takes a step at a time. It didn’t
matter how insignificant, but I wanted to be useful to others."
*********
"Live on. Live on forever."
*********
"What’s wrong with falling down? You can
always stand up again. If you look up at the sky after falling down, the blue
sky is also today stretching limitlessly and smiles at me… I’m alive."
*********
"If you feel frustrated, do something
about it"
*********
"People shouldn’t dwell on the past. It’s
enough to try your best in all that you’re doing now."
